August holds Leigh lines from FamilyTreeDNA

All Leigh lines from Ancestry are in this month. This information came from a website called ysearch.org. The site can be used by anyone for free, and it is provided by FamilyTreeDNA. ysearch was used to search for all persons with a surname of leigh and a haplogroup of I or its subgroups, and a Genetic Distance Report was created.

Ralph Leigh, b c1560, d c1614

Several lines descending from Ralph Leigh are well documented in the Leigh Descendancy Chart at the Welsh Leigh web site from traditional research. These lines are of the I1 haplogroup. The likely 67-marker Y-DNA of Ralph Leigh has been identified, and the researchers are hoping that DNA will provide a bridge to the ancestors of Ralph Leigh. They believe those ancestors lived in England, but they have no genealogical documents that substantiate that belief.

Three descendants of Ralph Leigh were involved in our determination of Ralph's Y-DNA markers. They are referred to as a descendant of Samuel Leigh, a descendant of Rector Daniel Leigh, and a descendant of William Leigh. Their ysearch IDs are 66XXS, H8G3U, and KGYRY, respectfully. You can use ysearch to display the values of their markers.

The descendant of Samuel has a perfect match with the markers that we believe belong to Ralph Leigh, and this person is the reference for the genetic matches reported by ysearch. The descendant of Rector Daniel Leigh has a genetic distance of 4 to Ralph Leigh, and the descendant of William Smith has a genetic distance of 1 to Ralph Leigh.

Rev. Edmund Leigh, chr 1736, d 1819

Two descendants of the Rev. Edmund Leigh had their Y-DNA tested for 67 markers. These descendants are of the I1 haplogroup.

A descendant of Samuel Leigh has the ysearch ID of 66XXS. As explained in the welshleigh site, his DNA markers are a perfect match with those believed to belong to Ralph Leigh, and this descendant is the reference for the genetic distances given in this page. The genetic distances reported in this website will be given relative to Ralph Leigh rather than to this descendant. This descendant also had his Y-DNA tested by Ancestry for 47 markers. Because the Rev. Edmund Leigh is in the line having the perfect match with Ralph Leigh, unless compensating mutations occurred, the Rev. Edmund Leigh also has a perfect match with Ralph Leigh.

A descendant of Rector Daniel Leigh has the ysearch ID of H8G3U, and his genetic distance from Ralph Leigh and from the Rev. Edmund Leigh is 4. The difference between this descendant and the Rev. Edmund Leigh is only five generations, and the genetic distance would normally be less than 4. However, the genetic mutation that caused the genetic distance of 4 happened to be in markers that change rapidly, causing the genetic distance to be larger than normal.

Oakley Leigh, b c1640, d 1709

A descendant of Oakley Leigh had his Y-DNA tested for 67 markers, and his ysearch ID is KGYRY. He is of the I1 haplogroup. His genetic distance from Ralph Leigh is 1. Ralph Leigh is the father of Oakley Leigh (I listed this person as a descendant of Oakley Leigh instead of Ralph Leigh so I could list Oakley Leigh in the Title of this post). You can use ysearch to display the 67 markers of this person. We don't know if the mutation causing the genetic distance of 1 was before or after Oakley Leigh. It would take further testing of other descendants of Ralph Leigh to make that determination.

James Leigh, b c1670, d 1728

Two descendants of James Leigh were tested by FamilyTreeDNA for 37 markers. Their haplogroups are unknown. Their ysearch IDs are Q57M8 and RDMQS. If you are interested in further information about James Leigh, use ysearch to bring up the records for James and click the link to email the contact person given on that record. In using ysearch, do a Search for Genetic Matches and enter the ysearch ID for the descendant. Keep the default of 0 for the maximum genetic distance, and select Only show people with my last name.

John Leigh, b c1792, d 1867

A descendant of John Leigh was tested by FamilyTreeDNA for 66 markers. His haplogroup is I1. The descendant's ysearch ID is KKUTA. If you are interested in further information about John Leigh, use ysearch to bring up the record for John and click the link to email the contact person given on that record. In using ysearch, do a Search for Genetic Matches and enter the ysearch ID for the descendant. Keep the default of 0 for the maximum genetic distance, and select Only show people with my last name.

John Leigh, b unknown, d unknown

A descendant of John Leigh was tested by FamilyTreeDNA for 67 markers. His haplogroup is unknown. The descendant's ysearch ID is 6ZY57. If you are interested in further information about John Leigh, use ysearch to bring up the record his record and click the link to email the contact person given on that record. In using ysearch, do a Search for Genetic Matches and enter the ysearch ID for the descendant. Keep the default of 0 for the maximum genetic distance, and select Only show people with my last name.

Ferdinando Leigh, b 1716, d 1779

A descendant of Ferdinando Leigh was tested by FamilyTreeDNA for 67 markers. His haplogroup is unknown. The descendant's ysearch ID is A48RA.

Francis Leigh, b c1622, d c1684

A descendant of Francis Leigh was tested by FamilyTreeDNA for 67 markers. His haplogroup is unknown. The descendant's ysearch ID is UF8HD. If you are interested in further information about Francis Leigh, use ysearch to bring up the record his record and click the link to email the contact person given on that record. In using ysearch, do a Search for Genetic Matches and enter the ysearch ID for the descendant. Keep the default of 0 for the maximum genetic distance, and select Only show people with my last name.
